Child items and test cases

The AI Child Item Generator on a work item proposes children of a chosen type - often Task or Test Case - based on the parent’s fields and your optional focus text.

Workflow

  1. Open the parent (for example a User Story or Feature).
  2. Go to the AI Child Item Generator tab (exact placement depends on process template and layout).
  3. Choose the child type and add focus text if you want constraints (for example “API only” or “happy path”).
  4. Regenerate until the list is close, then select the rows to create and submit.

Practices

  • Start from a parent that already has enough context in description and acceptance criteria; the generator performs better with solid inputs.
  • Treat output as a first draft - rename, refine steps, and set priority before signaling readiness.
  • Area Path is inherited automatically from the parent work item when child items are created.
  • Align test cases with your test management strategy (shared steps, data variants, or integration vs. UI splits).
